The natural environment on Herz Mountain is highly unusual. Experience the local ecology of this mountain which features unique peat bogs, plant and animal and bird life, the likes of which are only otherwise indigenous to the Canadian tundra and Greenland. The mountain itself measures 4268 feet — around 2500 feet higher than other ski areas to the east of Timberline. The mountain is adjacent to the Dolly Sods Wilderness area which is on the Eastern Continental Divide. It acts as a weather barrier, impounding weather patterns such as abundant lake effect snow.
